Butch so good to see your name on the site. I hate them elfs too man they creep me out. My visa is in the mail so they say but I will visit Ca. soon, next week. I found some Polakiem (polacks) to teach here in B'klyn so its good. They invite me to parties and feed me and it makes me want to stay But I'm a goin east so if you have any yarbles you'll come visit, meat a Polish wife and that will be all for you. Remember the time is right to get the hell out of America so join me if you dare, they are nuts for in-breed music over there too!! If you are all ready married a great family trip is Poland Yes Poland its beautiful cheap and they have castles everywhere, thats what happens when several empires conquer your country. Butt do remember Poland kicked ass for centuries before the downfall, in fact the only country to take Moscow was poland thats why the Russians had it out for the poles its like you kick your little brothers ass for years then he grows up twice as big as you and everything changes. Enuff history go get loaded and write something here. Love Jamal

I thought some of you may get a chuckle out of what one of my first-grade students wrote...and turned in. It is word for word. Our writing assignment, in keeping with the holiday spirit, was to write about elfs. He wrote, "Elfs wear little green suits. They make toys. I hate elfs. You dam elfs. FU elfs." what can you say to writing like that. Don't any of yall be stealin' that cuz I'll be the one rippin it off to make a holiday rock song cuz I hate them damn elfs too...

Ah well you see, when dealing with foreign governments waiting is what happens. You see our immigration policy is so difficult for my Polish brothers the Poles not to be outdone make it a little difficult for us wanting to work their. They know we just go for the women so they have to hassle us. Needless to say I am still here. Not why I am writing now though, I had problems getting onto the site as Stan mentioned. Here it is: Last weekend well before Thanksgiving, I saw a real treat in the Godfather of the Buthchers Mr. Frank Wakefield. Playing guitar and doing some fine catterwallin too was Mr. Jim Lewin. I will say damned when Jim ran that guitar neck I saw a side of the old boy that we don't see with the other bands he is more closely associated. What I mean is not to detract from any of them or Jim, but I must say in spite of all the pain Jim is going through, he made me realize I was not only seeing one legend that night but two. Even better he's a legend that loves US!!! and yeah you expected it Ace but you don't know didilly about cold, your blood has barely a sense memory of New York. See some of you all soon. Jamal

Ace - sounds like you have a Jamal song in the wings... You've got the Staminals pegged. The growers come out of the hills, still dressed in their camo's, bearing names like Camo Chris because of his dependable wardrobe. But with him comes the goods, delivered to Mr. Soul, his favorite guitar player and co-conspirator in consuming the coveted Big Sur Holy Spark. With Jeffy with us this time out, we should hand out Spinal Tap approved ear plugs, in addition to lambskin condems to all burka sporting femmes. And there's always too much to drink and that's before the after party in the hotel room. http://www.montereycountyweekly.com/issues/Issue.12-02-2004/music/Article.clubs_feature_2 skr

I know cold is relative, but it's damn cold here in my garage this morning. Makes me think of that poor Prince / rat-bastard Jamal, teaching in Poland. (he's teaching them english, he speaks it pretty well, his diction is flawless, as far as Polocks can tell...) I'm thinking of those hippy waifs in Big Sur who will scurry into the Fernwood this Saturday, seeking shelter from the storm only to find the Stanimal Nation conjuring no less than the ancient demon spirits of the mountains to come up to dance. All Hell will break loose. then all the gear will be carefully put away, Hell will seep into the walls as the band drinks at the bar, reveling in the warmth they've created, then it will all dissipate again, the loaded heroes of the underworld will stumble out to their rides, too drunk to get laid, and forget to get paid.

Easy Jamal. Steady as you go, mate. Hamlet's story is sorted, twisted, painful, harsh, and worse... be kind. This IS the Drifter's site. Come as you are. Be as you are. Leave as you are. AND, feel free to speak your mind, matey. I must say, it was great fun jamming with you at Pacofest this year. ALmost all the original (video) butchers were there for a reunion. Cy Sperling didn't show but we did pull out a few of the old chestnuts, and as far as I can tell, that's why we do this.

I am just barely recovered from the strangest dream. I dreamt of a wild party where everyone was my friend and was very cool, witty funny, kind and beautiful and I was truly blessed to be there. Then there was the ferocious sound of four fenders blaring through me like an electric current. There was green vodka, strange chocolates that made you feel delightful.there was bakanie and wines of all sorts, a gluttons delight of grub, I never wanted to leave that place that time that dream. It was in its plain simplicity a damned fine time with the finest vintage friends anyone could hope to share. When I awoke I was in this foreign embassy in New york, I was asking about my green card for polska. They say it is not ready you cannot go to Polska and work until you get it. I say well why cant I go to Poland and get it, after all that is where it is now right.? Yes it is but you must get it from here in this embassy. I say well I could save you the trouble of lugging that paper over here, and pick it up there for ya. No Mr. Kruk you must get it here. I says why? It is the law, they reply.I shouted you're wrong my Polish goodlady I am the LAW !! Now I have a large bootmark on my dupa.Jamal in New York waiting for green card to work in Polska. yes in deedy - another steller year of fun and frolic. One little thing... the videotapes that Ren & Skimpy made seem to be lost somewhere. The only one they have is the one that was in the camera, the last show with the Butchers. Now we know who will be able to answer such questions as, "who were the Butcher's in the 2004 Pacofest?" I believe that Jamal still has prizes leftover and is willing to distribute them from Poland. Did anyone see the videotapes floating around?

All hail the animal called the stanimal! Special thanks to Stan who, as near as I can tell did just about everything that needed to be done to make the fest a success - getting the awesome PA, setting up, dealing with primadonna rock stars, breaking down (the stage that is) and who knows what else. Thanks to Ox and whoever else helped Stan set up. Mucho gratitude to the hosts with the most, Gramma and Gramps McLean for once again opening the sacred space to our crazy brand of sacred profanity. Thanks, Kevin, for the coffee and for haulin' out the trash ... but after all, that's what Dumpsters are for. Thanks, Gary, for the abundant carnivorous treats. Thanks, Jamal, for being in Poland and Rancho del Oso at the same time. Thanks, Leean, for being you. Thanks, McKinley, for the early a.m. lullabies. Thanks, Will, for unveiling the drumbeat of the future - it won't be long till the next generation bands dominate the weekend!

Who were the original Butchers to appear in the SY Sperling video, the first Butcher tune? (hint;this line up only played once) 2.who Played Chung Gwynn in The Adventures of Cap'n Andy ? 3.How many women appeared on stage at the Catalyst as Butchers? 4.Who played Goosefats son in his campaign video? It came stock with Celine Dion, Phylis Diller, and Rod Stewart dialed in. I think he can download more voices from the internet but his battery went dead doing Celine Dion's greatest hits. He's still working on slapping his chest, with feeling but it looks like we're going to have a Dion gets down segment. Hopefully he'll download Jerry before he gets here. The stage is open for suprises. I know we can count on you, the endless well of creativity, to bring one.

Awright fellow drifter wanderers, time to get off the flip flop and focus intent on this years fest. You've got to put it on the radar, book in advance, and dust off your camping gear and vocal chords to make it so. believe it, build it and they will come. you know you want it. Tell the boss you need the time off, convince yourself that you deserve it, break out of your rutt and come and shake your butt.

Howdy Folks! Finally got to a decent computer to send a shout out to all things Drifting. News from me is that I was asked to be the direktor of an english school in Cracow. I am going to take the job sooo that might have meant no Jamal again UNLESS I asked to wait until mid october to start my job I did, so unfortunately I will be at the Pacofest this year . That means some form of Fake Booby Judy will play are you hearin me Ace ? tune it up and try to remember some songs. The Butchers?? I'm game but I think we only know 3 or 4 songs. The Pushnik accordian band ? I'm game for that too. I hope to be up in the Cruz a few days before to help out and rehearse I know that is usually not allowed. Yes my quiet and reserved sister will attend too. Lonesome trucker yes you did help out and the swamp is looking mighty good, keep them fingers crossed that september is hot out east so things don't get moldy. I guess this year we will have to sing the praises of Mr. Canary, my heart is sad about that. Love to all Jamal

We found Samuel Clemen's personal diary, made Clint Eastwood suck down the local brew and recorded his thoughts, and lolo channeled this real curious spirit of a bass playing 16th Century Polish prince! B. Kingsolver's and Pinetop Perkin's submissions were both rejected this go-round.

I just reserved one of the Twin Redwoods trail camps for Saturday night. I'm not sure how many sites there are total - I seem to remember 3 or 4. If anyone else wants to either reserve another one for Saturday, or reserve one for Sunday, here's how you do it: Call 831-338-8861 after 10:00 am on a weekday. Tell them you want to reserve a Twin Redwoods campsite. They will tell you to mail $10 to Big Basin Redwoods State Park, 21600 Big Basin Way, Boulder Creek, CA 95006. The more of these we get, the more NOISE we can make until the wee hours without disturbing some clueless hikers. Whee! Technically, you're supposed to register or something at the bottom of the trail out by the ocean when you get there ...

Enuf about who's NOT playing, lets hear from the upsarts, the one offs, the fly-by-nights. Pushnik's got to have some psyco-oompah-zydaco band going with that accordian, And what happened to huang dong hotel? let's just invite Jamals sister Leanne and she can be in everybody's band. (she would too.) Has McKinley written a song about his ambulance ride from Strawberry? Is Kai gonna sit behind the kit for the Chalupa chicks? Will Ace finally stop imitating other people and come up with something original? Will Sawyer ever return? These mysteries and many more may be revealed. Be there or miss out.

Dear John, The fuckers are doing it again. It started with Nixon, Ron Reagan picked up the ball and is STILL running with it...(back in the midwest there's Reagan memorial billboards featuring just his name, dates of birth and death overlaid on a sickly candy green background resplendent with a small pile of supposed JellyBelly jellybeans). Anyway, the Bushies are using America's angst, guilt, stubborness, despair and just sick of it all attitude about Viet Nam for their political servings in their attacks on you...and it makes me sick. Alas and alack, no Space Heaters this year. There's a possibility that it isn't so...must get in touch with the Lewis family in Gillespie, Il....it seems there's a Johnfest marking the 10th anniversary of his passing on the Pacofest weekend in downtown Gillespie. I will attend that instead of Pacofest(and I'm sure half of Paco's spirit will too...they were tight...)Jenny and Barry refuse to attend Pacofest without an interpreter and Ron and Tammy are nursing their cosmic loss of a loved one wounds with an Autumn trip to the the Eastern Sierra. I still need to talk with the Lewis folk about final plans. It is my utmost wish to be able to attend BOTH fests for so many reasons(love for my dear friends first and foremost) and hope to bring the band(they are on a hot streak)but alas and alack...we'll see. Tina and the boy will, of course, attend. I've got my teddy, what else do I (we) need? Your'all Queens and Kings and I am your humble servant...Canary

I hear Push has been exploring his Polka/Mexicano roots with a beautiful non kid size accordion... Jamal? You were'nt there last year and yet your popularity soared, how will you compete with your own absence? As for me... Kinda like sex and air: you don't really notice it 'till you aint gettin' any. I've neglected this forum, please to forgive. And that beady eyed fat weasel Ron Gravy hasn't the stones to stand up and speak on his own beliefs, he's waiting to see which way the wind blows, and usually nobody blows wind harder that The GOOSEFAT. Thank you, kings of the realm, keepers of the sacred fire, if it weren't for you we'd all be freezing cold and boring as hell. Well, if any of y'all shows up when I'm not around just remember to blow out the candle when you leave. If the electricty comes back on there's a couple of old guitars in the closet. Yes Jamal, that was a big time on Sinlit Lane. I'm pretty sure the reason you were able to stay up so long was because we kept propping your head up and pouring Old Crow down your throat. Everytime we did that your eyes would bug out, you looked like you saw a ghost, you would run in place for a spell and then hug your bass like it was a puppy. Then Jeffy would hit you over the head with a searing slide riff and you'd come right back like you'd never left the planet. Here's another hint for question #1. The slide player left the band to persue a personal a passing fancy. Or perhaps the talentless hack was never invited back. We have conflicting reports on this. ~~ Well, I'm getting tired of these same old photos. Whataya say we throw a TacoFest? It's about that time of year that the tomatos ripen in the field.

Sadly I must return to New York to tie up my east coast chapter and pilfer some coffers so I can set up my grift mill out west. Here are some BUTCHER trivia questions correct answers will receive prizes at the next Pacofest. 1. Bonus:who wrote Goosefats campaign song? Thats it for now kids and remember tell your friends to come by and try these questions!! love Jamal

Ace, you missed a barn burner up here. We were sitting on the porch, like good hillbillies, having a little bluegrass jam - for about 6-hours, when up walks Jamal. A couple hours later, about 1:30 -2 AM we kick off an electric jam (McKinnley, Jeffy, Stan, Jamal, Keith on drums) and we lifted the roof off the joint. And also drank a Rite-Aid sized 1.5 litre bottle of Old Crow and more cheap beer than you can shake a Costco card at. We stopped playing around 6 AM. No tapes. No photos. But nobody will ever forget it. See you soon. PF-04 coming sooner than later.

Dearest Fellow Groaning Mourners, It is with a heavy head and groaning gut that I speak to you. I am just now abl to stop sobbing long enough to peck out this message. an I am not proun but humbly admit to, once again dissappointing my sponsor and my constituency by falling and might I add rather hardly at that; Off the wagon. Once I heard about the Gipper goin south for the last time I crawled inside a bottle of Ole Military Special Bourbon incidentally I was given the bottle by General "nuts McAuliffe. I was saving it for Carter's funeral but stumbled across it looking for morning reading material in the Bathroom clothes hamper. Well as I watched the coverage in my 3 day old cotton powder blue button fly boxer drawers I must have found where I stashed the key to the Liquer cabinet and by the second day was hitting the creme de menthe. Theres when the teouble started apparently the "fat" doesn't see too well you know tears over Ronnie an all but I manage to make it to the Clown Room for a few and those pictures of me with that samoan were taken while I was completely unconscious!! Please for the Love of Ron I'm only human !! It certainly indicates my love and fealty to the Great Liberator. Well I'm fine now sober going on well I havent had a drink in twelve hours. But I can assure you that this momentary lapse will in no way adversely effect my ability any more than it all ready has to rule my state nor my country. Neither will further instances in the near forseeable future effect my present capabilities. Furthermore any future relapses shall in no way cause this country any greater shame than the present. This my dear supporters is my pledge to you. If any good has come from the death of Ole Gip it is the comfort that his incoherrant blathering and bed wetting is finally over. I only hope we all can go out like Ron, in a diaper. But for my money I must say The King pulled off a much more tasteful funeral motorcade. With reverence to few, senator Charles Henry Goosefat

Yeah, I been in Kirlan's Kastle!! He probably don' remember me, but Jimmy Joe Redpath n' me set there a spell back aroun' 1980 or so after a right fine adventure involving running out of gas in the middle of the desert in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night. MitMaw was there too, he can vouch for the veracity. Long Live King Kirlan! As to the Beckster's post, yeah, the veil usually gets very thin around this time of year, although it wasn't as strong for me this year, however Jane and I were talking and trying to figure out where Joni's new place is and wondering - isn't she livin in Paco and Becky's old place in back of Beth's house? But also, I gotta say, every dream I ever have that Anpao is in it seems he is facilitating connections from one side of the veil to the other. I've been told he is an old soul and several of his lives have been in Tibet. But that's neither here nor there, and neither am I. Seems I can't much remember much of anything anymore, and I don't remember if that's good or bad. Humans. They're good people.

Ok here's how it was eight years after. It was the farthest thing from my mind but then I started having Paco dreams about a week ago. I've had several now. I've lost some of the details but we were living in a room I think it was in Santa Cruz we had just moved in, we had some stuff though and a phone but I went somewhere and came back and the door was locked but then it was open maybe because he came back with the key but i'm not sure about that part, in fact it's all a bit fuzzy now, but there was something about some art project or something that Paco was doing, I think he went to meet with someone about it, and then when he and I were both back in this apartment place there was that weirdness that always happens in these dreams where I have to explain to him that I'm not sure I want to be married anymore because my life has totally changed and I have another partner and so on, always kind of awkward because we still are married in the dream, and that's kind of cool, but it creates all kinds of conflicts for me. And then this morning there was a dream about Paco and Anpao. Pao was pretty young still. More weirdness, you know how dreams are, and then when I reflected on it later on today it made me think about the time Jane came to visit with her temporary boyfriend when she was still married to Andy and they went out to a show and left Pao with Paco and I, we were still living at B40 then, and Pao was a little scared and so Paco told him this really cool story about a bear, I don't remember how it goes but I remember how it really calmed the boy and it even calmed me, it was a sweet moment. Anyway, it's been nice to have the dream visitations they don't happen too often, and then while I'm at it I have to tell you about the other night when I saw this new movie--Eternal Sunshine and the Spotless Mind or something like that--same director that made Being John Malkovich, highly creative--HIGHLY recommended--and it made me feel kind of melancholy after because it made me think about how people get in relationships and sometimes they get stuck in a rut and sometimes they lose track of what's important, and then if you break up or one of you dies all you have left is memories and after a while the memories can kind of fade but they are still precious and you get the bad with the good and even the bad can be precious, you just live with it all and it all seems good after a while because it's all you got. Anyway, it's a good movie. And he was a good man and we are all the better for having known him. Amen.

Hey Ace, thanks for the invite. I shoulda woulda been there too had I been there but I wasn't so I couldn't. Hopefully maybe next time. As for the rest o' ya, you have no excuse, so don't even try. However, do keep in touch, only don't touch where you don't belong, especially those young'ns they've got trouble enuff as it is. Be kind to yourself, raise some political ruckus (Go Stan!--take those words out to the street man!) I invite you all to come visit me and Mayor Bob--and BRIAN!--in Arcata anytime. Ace, To answer your question, what is wrong with this world?, I'll boil it down to two words; Christians and Republicans. In that order. Where are the lions when you need them? That's the question we need to be asking ourselves. Today I watched Armitage testify before the 9/11 senate committee and when asked what could be done to make us safer Armitage responded that by giving covert operations more latitude to "do the lords work," we would all be better off. Whew! Flip the channel and the Supreme court is hearing a separation of church and state case. Do we still need to talk about this? Now, that's a problem which brings us back to Christians/Republicans who have taken over the White House, the House, the Senate, and are in an all out war to take over the Supreme court, and given the results of the last presidential election, one could argue they have already succeeded. Now, to your question, "will I ever stop missing him?" Lets hope not. And to your trip north... looking forward to seeing you. The door is always open and the light's on in the hall. skr

Stan! love that picture. What the hell is wrong with this world? I'm heading your way, Tommy Huch. 1 week from today. Comin' up on Paco Depart time again, what is this now, 8 years? Will I ever stop missing him? The pain has lessened, I'm less paralized, even managed to draw some strength from the struggle to endure. All that "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger" and "I'm a better person for knowing him" stuff. But why does it take loss to appreciate? You people, my tireless, tried and true blue friends, I'm a better man for knowing you all, and I'm sure better still for times yet to come. I guess that's what the fest is all about anyway. So todays wish for you all: the 2 "B's- Be kind to yourself, and Believe in yourself. ACE

Ahh... the blast of cold water, the freshness of reality when the skin is exposed, the blistering torch of outrage! Stan, you doez a body good. The sad sharp poke when you realize that selling out your integrity doesn't fetch such a high price, (everyones doing it, its a buyers market) and doesn't make you any safer or happier. Everyone thinks they are on the cusp of the "haves" and will not be left behind. Truth is, most of us are "have nots" when it comes to the greedy goodies, and we are being teased with a promise of membership. We are both the haves and the have nots. What you do unto the least of my children, you do unto me, and to yourselves.

That's right Ace. You can lead a whore to water but you can't make her dance. I'm pretty sure that's how that old saying goes. I might have to go look that up. My memory is fading. I remember that once there was a group of people that raged on and on and then it came down to once a year they held the torch high and some years it burned brighter than others. Then a dark force took over the nation that promoted democracy by killing tens of thousands of people and this dark force gutted the soul of the planet. It got so dark they threw Martha Stewart, pervayor of fine napkin holders, in prison. I think she's folding regular white cotton (35% cotton/polyester 65%) sheets in the prison laundry by now - or maybe I'm seeing into the future... and the war raged on and the dark souls gorged at the trough of war profiteering and the lies pulsed through their veins and surfaced in our living rooms in bouncing images in living color, and the people felt warm and fuzzy that we were being protected by the solid leadership of a Christian who regularly received divined information from the great God above and because our leaders divine nature we were safe from the evil that lurks outside of our borders. As the souls of the people withered it was all they could do to make it to the coffee pot and to their daily jobs. And our last hope, Senator Goosefat has retired to kill fish in NY, or maybe just to go fishing at the great schools of our land. Gardners know the truth. You must water your crops for them to grow. You must till the land. You must hoe rows . You gotta get early in the morning and plow! You gotta get up early in the morning and plow!

The east speaks for the west and vice-versee and all you can do in the presence of THE giant hammer is again vote for Ralph Nader. Yeah Butch I know I know, Practically speaking I have to stay out here as I am enrolled in grad school part time and I am making up lost credits to get accepted in a masters in education program out there. I am following the footsteps of my mentor the lately great Mike Pushnik and becomming a teacher or at least looking like one. actually I need a prt time job that I can live with without working all year. The europeans solidified my belief that work should only be done when necessary, and only for 6 hours a day as needed. So ant advice you can offer Push let me know, I know the job situation is bunk out there butt it should turn around soon. Man I gotta get out of the cold. If you followed my jones story and were worried about me, I saw Crow this weekend and I guess that is all I need say, boy does it feel good. Well folks the sands in my watch are dropping downwards onto the floor and my gig is almost up I am going back stateside on jan.6th to see what I can salvage of a badly torn up life. My mission here was a success in the Mexico of Europe where life isn't easy but there is much love and spirit. I spent the holidays with the Kruk clan touring southern Poland. We saw Kracow a lot, then Auschwitz, and Birkenau makes you real mad scared and shocked man it is a must see to witness a place that hate built. I saw a fortune teller who told me good news, she said the Butchers would get together for a CD! I saw the Holy sites of Poland 11th century castle ruins and best of all my personal hero's crypt Tadeusz Kosciuscko I left my NY Mets Cap on his crypt and the guard gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek for caring. Kosciuscko was a master of putting up forts in the right place during the Revolution that made america you can still see them too at West Point military academy still standing strong over the hudson watching out for the British, who are the biggest assholes in europe I will have you know. Sorry if you have friends there but they are pompous.New years the Kruks were in the oldest town square besides Prague watching a huge display of fireworks and being drenched in champagne. I am skinny a bit of a drunk and smoke like crazy so I will miss this land but must return to my own and start the next chapter which I will call "two" Love you all and will start hunting you down soon Jamal

Here comes ace sneaking backstage at the Drifter site, gettin' up early and lookin' fo' the catering table. I've met steevie wonder, steevie ray vaughn and david lindley noshing finger food between sets. It seems musicians never get over the wonder of free food. The lean times enforce the animal desire to hunt, to drag the kill into a tree for protection, to slip a few dinner rolls and packets of jam into a gig bag for later. So far this year is the best in many moons, hardly any mistakes! I saw fireworks explode over the Marina, kissed a girl at midnight, walked my dog around the neighborhood at 4a.m., and woke up happy and hopeful. Thank you Gary and Becky for taking pictures, and to stan for posting them. It may be a trick of the calendar, but now's as good a time as any to reflect on what is, and what is to come.
