the scuttlebutt on the street is that the highlight of the entire weekend was the stirring, pee-in-your-pants fantastically hilarious rendition of the new Butcher's classic "Ken Sawyer". Other highlights included the "things" Becky made, the strong kid element, the plethora of food and drink (great baja tacos, but more whiskey next year please), and the spirit of cooperation. I heard Darkis and Chung Gwin were backstage, but I never did see them. The muses blessed the redwoods and await our annual return. Special thanks to the road crew, Heidi for the great face painting, and Ox for working so hard on Thursday, Friday and Monday. Quote for the day: "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it people like me."

Well, standing on terrace 3 yesterday, dreamily musing on the capriciousness of life or some such nonsense, 3 gunshots barked out from the woods above (smal caliber handgun). One bullet whizzed by above my head. After yelling at my gun freak neighbors to shoot uphill, I visited their ridge top trailer home. I urge my party to endorse Senator Charles Henry Goosefat for president of these great United States. As his running mate, I too wish to push the platform: Legal reading age:35 (to keep impressionable youth from being swayed by subversive literature.) Annex Mexico as the 51st state. There will be no need for so many mexicans to illegaly cross the border, they'll already be in America. we'll call it New American Mexico. NAM for short. As for all other immigrants; "no thank you" America is closed These are just a few of the new and innovative initiatives we propose to change the shape of America. Well well, Mr. Jones... how thick is your skin? are you saying you don't like this form of absurd humor? Does the subconcious/manifested thoughts of drug addicts, drifters, or menstuating women have less validity than the mainstream garden variety type of human? Isn't the world gross and stifled enough already without people being shamed into further conformity? It may not be hi brow or even that funny, but it is honest, risky, and healthy. For those of you who didn't make it to the Pushnik house warming, Graduation, May baby celebration. You didn't miss much. Just the regular crew. Band in the back yard. Push smoked a turkey for 20 hours. Lewin was burning on guitar. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention, we set up the band in the back yard? How unusual. Reggie played banjo. Mariah played solo guitar and did an original tune. Kids! Jeez.. Pretty typical warm-up for the Octoberfest. Who's making beer this year?

Had a dream about our friend Jeff Huch last week. He was young and smilin', with long blond hair. Probably about 25 or 28, but I didn't know him then. He said he had to get out from under the burdon, so he pretended to die. In the dream, I was relieved of all the grief I carry over his death, I felt so light, so young and happy, I understood. Got to let it go so can live again. The best time of your life is RIGHT NOW.

Well, Well, Well. What a great bunch of babes we are. So many moms(all babes), dads(all beefcakes) and love children(all angles), all together finding our path to each other once again. The vibes are ammassing again and I am so ready to play again. There's a rurmor that LOra has a new band? HMMM maybe we'll get to hear some o her new gems. Now that she has new intellectual pedigrees she may bless us with her new perspective in verse. And what about Fake Booby Judy? and the rest of tthose great bands? So more daily existence stretches out before us to our next opportunity to have a group dream with our lost friend in his twenties or ..... New stuff is only worth shit when there's old stuff under it. Can't wait to growl in the forest again . When is the full moon in October? If it's nearer to the 7,8,9 let's change our date. The first weekend in October is, as many things are, hard to determine this year. Monday the 9 th is Columbus Day and Yom Kippur which may be easy for some to take off . I will take a Monday off for sure whenever we DO ITand you should tooo!!!! Then you can hear the late Sunday bands as well!!!. Think about it and respond OK???? WET KISSES to YOU.

I plunked down and got all six campsites at Twin Redwoods for Saturday. The powers that be say you can only rent a space for one night then you gots to be moving on. So, if someone else wants to reserve any of those sites for Sunday, or Friday, the reservation number is 831.338.8860. Otherwise we'll have to drift across the road. Anyway you slice it, we own Twin Redwoods for Saturday /Saturday night and we'll have no complaints from the peanut gallery about somebody wanting to express themselves until the sun rises with their amps turned up to 11. Those who speak in metaphors and verse are known to know where he has gone. If not in earthlyterms, in heavenly worlds and so on. Yes, 9/29 - 10/1 it is. The time we conjure up his spirit once again. We will rent three sites for friday night and surely do much more. I begin right now indeed to call on him once more. For I remember the taste of love that he gave to me before. When he tried to explain how feelings are not freed easily, but only with pain and misery. He was telling me that I am one of those he loved so dear. His heart was large and had many scars. I hope that most have been erased by our yearly family dance and love embrace.

Driftertown PacoFest...a blast to the past while enroute to our new identities, merely another stop on the old highway leading to the familiar yet strange new future that beckons us all in unique ways, our paths veering every which way far from the source, yet meandering back to intersect again as we attempt to make our frazzled fractions again add up to a whole... WHOLE LOTTA FUN that is. Hey, kids! Not an easy task and my gratitude and love go out to each and every one of you who had the time and stamina to stick around. -- I've been reveling in the many moments I had over the weekend. Drove home with no music playing. Just the sweet thoughts and feelings from the whole lovefest-weekend. Okay, so the projectile vomiting wasn't the high water mark for me. Its just tradition. My deepest thanks for everyone's contribution to making this celebration happen. You know who you are. You know what you did. With all of our peripatetic lives its increasingly difficult to get us all in the same place for a few days. Hi y'all! Yo, whatup?!!! Koo Koo (yeah, he's still around) and I are winding up a successful fishing and gambling trip along the mighty Missipp here in Missouri. We came across a rather unusual but well intentioned musical group that quite possibly could earn a slot at Pacofest in the near future. At a place called The Guardian Cafe in Thayer, Mo. (When you're in Thayer, You're there!) there was this group, The Huong Dong Hotel. Now Koo Koo, upon hearing their name, gets all excited and stuff (I think it was the Dong part) and starts pulling off some of his old tricks. You know, like holding a gun to your head while you're driving, or pretending he's Jack Palance in the movie Shane...Anyway they got two groovy hoo-doo chicks, a coupla of psycedelic drill instructor types, and some sensitive dudes. Check em out! With probing recklessness that can only be described as a form of meanspirited altruism, the clown and I bid you'all a fond adieu. Till next time.

The Supreme Court has demonstrated that this "democratic" petri dish has outlived its usefulness. Let's bring back the days where if you want to run the country, you have to storm the government center and television stations with tanks and machine guns. through the winter of distress, past the dried bones of fallen beasts, on the far side of the daunting mountain top, now running down hill, the day warming as the sun rises; we survivors dare to dream of carefree days and bountiful enterprises. We who held our breath as the lightning struck the house, we who left the farm as the fertile topsoil blew to dust, we who re-invented the wheel, then put our shoulders behind it, we dreamers forced into pragmatism, starved of reward to test our faith, fed just enough to keep us alive, but not enough to satisfy our hunger, we, true believers, relax our faces reflexively into smiles, our eyes squint and our vision blurs with tears of joy freely falling.

What the hey? Am I the only one with a mindless day-job with access to a computer? Are our Drifter compadres so involved with their current productive lives that they've chosen to leave the past to the soft sepia tones of their selective minds? Do the words "Drifters" or "Butchers" or "The Farm" or "Grits" or "Organic" bring up painful memories, something akin to ripping a bandage off an oozing wound that just won't seem to heal? WELL DO THEY?

"A similar thing has already happened to many other people; great and famous men have shared the same fate as this young man. Once in their youth the light shone for them; they saw the light and followed the star, but then came reason and the mockery of the world; then came faint-heartedness and apparent failure; then came weariness and disillusionment, and so they lost their way again, they became blind again. Some of them have spent the rest of their lives looking for us again, but could not find us." --Herman Hesse, Journey to the East

Were they blind BEFORE they saw the light or just on different paths? (The Hermosa Chronicles by Jim Shine) Mr. Hesse's version of aging is ageless, especially here in the West... At a mental roadblock at this stage of the game, I am sure it is just a manifestation of an overindulged life process. Chekhov, Woody Harrelson, Munk(?), that scary Norweigen painter, all had/have their doubts...I better chill and catch some air... To my friends, nos vemos.

"This year can be a partnership of the light we find and the light we make. Let us revel in the darkness, that we may gaze upon the lights we find in heaven with awe, with wonder, with joy at all that had been created for each of us. But when the lights of heaven are obscured or powerless before the darkness that confounds our life, then let us remember all the candles that are ours to kindle, all the bright flames we have it in our power to trim, so we can burn away the clouds from heaven's light and bring that light and with it truth and caring and hope to earth once more.

We have a tentative schedule for this year's fest thanks to the hard work of our booking agent, Elvis' stunt double. Saturday is the big day, starting with the Savorcitos (Jeffy's band) at 4, Liquid Foundation at 5:30, Lost Dog (Stan's band) at 7, Springfield High (Push's band) at 8:30, Blood Sisters at 9:30, Busted Patch (Ace & Jamal) at 10:30. On Sunday at 11:11 we will gather to share remembrances of Paco. Mike McKinley will then entertain us for the next 12 hours.

Woooeee! Do we ever need a break from these days to reconnect! And in case you noticed and were devastated by the abscence of the mighty Butchers there may be a surprise or two while you all go back to Springfield High. On another note our Drummer, Dry Patch recently was dared to eat a black widow (he never refused a dare in his life) and needless to say he won't have the use of his arms for several months so we will be begging er ah auditioning drummers fri and sat unless someone knows of anyone who's not afraid to volunteer it will be easier over the internet to say so than it will to say no in person (if you catch my threat) there are two job requirements 1) drummer must not be sober 2) drummer must have been in trouble with the law Thanks can't wait to see you all love BUD

Hey Bud, That sounds like me on both counts. Some drawbacks though,1. The people at Pacofest might want to hear some new freak on the skins as I'm drumming for Springfield High and alot in the Bloods. 2. The little woman might not like it if I jam for 6 hours straight while she makes sure Kai doesn't disappear into the forest instead of relaxing. On the other hand I give you my promise that around midnight of October 6 there will be at least 3 intoxicated and criminal drummers in your area itching to work off steam and show off their prowess to the assembled hordes. Needless to say,it is an honor to jam with the likes of youse guys and I would be delighted. Sharing that fun is what Pacofest is all about. Sharing childcare comes natural to this bunch and who cares what the old lady thinks, Let's Rock!

Shiver me timbers and blow me down. I stayed up late to soak up the lingering mojo left by the fire. Jeffy sang Burrito tunes, Stan partied full throttle without puking, and some tie-died tripping tree elph with a self satisfied smile danced around to the music that was still playing on frequencies not heard by the rest of us. Earl was there in the morning, nursing the fire that refused to go cold. The memories are already dreamy, the drive home filled with reflections and easy smiles. Tommy Huch, your family is beautiful, strong, kind, and self assured. All the kids, with their ready friendships and adventuresome spirits, truly inspiring. Thank you, one and all for your participation, the reminder to deeply love and fiercely live. Help ever, hurt never.

Hey folks! I've just gotten over my post paco-fest depression and want to say how wonderful it was to see all of you and your kinthis year and I vow not to let another year pass without seeing a lot of you. It was truly a joy (for me at least) to play music with you guys and while I'm a sorry replacement for Roscoe I enjoyed it just the same. You folks up north are wonderful people and it gives me hope for the human race knowing there are a slew of great kids being brought up by many of you. Until next time I send my love to all who know me as Jamaal.

Last night I had this dream... I was watching an old home movie about a little boy pulling a donkey, it seemed like I was involved some way, maybe it was a Butcher project or something. Then came the part where someone intentionally set the donkey's back on fire, the fire was hollowing the donkey out, burning its innards as it was standing there, like a living fire pit. The smell was awful, I felt remourseful that I was somehow to blame. "this isn't funny" I thought. Waddaya make of that? Anyone?

First of all, how would you know what it smelled like if you were watching a home movie? Second: when did this web site turn into a therapy session? Your 'somehow I was to blame' comment speaks to your egomania: that you are responsible for some little boys donkey in a film. And your self hatred: using any opportunity to feel shame and guilt. Get over it, get on with it, stop whining and DO SOMETHING HELPFUL! You asked for it.

To All ye fine People, Firstly I miss you all a heap and wish you all a Fantastic Christmas Kwanza Channuka or whatever your spirit feels like calling this winter solstice time rite. Even though most of you won't read this until May or so. Anyhoo things in L.A. are as smelly as ever, The Patch are still playin' and the other nite I saw a marquee at THE GIG a club in L.A. and on it was "PUSH" so I went in and to my dismay it was not Push at all but some lame ass outfit hell they didn't even Know "Young Secretary LOve" I of course started a fight with what appeared to be their leader but he said he had to go schmooze up some record exec. Goes to show ya that people will steal anybodys act, the reason I was so mad was that I thought I was the only one rippin' off Push's act. Hope your year ahead is full of glee we could all use some. Much love Jamal

Hey Guys, Remember right around the time Paco decided to split the planet there was a mighty comet streaking through the heavens? Well here we are at another death day anniversary and there is a spectacular and unexpected comet gracing the sky and messing with our astrological influences in a big way. Check out the news article at http://www.bradenton.com/mld/bradenton/2916144.htm and some cool pictures at http://encke.jpl.nasa.gov/ As far as the astrological significance, you'll just have to ask your astrologer.

I'll be posting some pics from that day just to give those who are actually showing up hoping for something new to look at. The grits with Jeffy jammed an extra hour after closing time and the Mayor of San Gregorio had to set 'em straight about what they could and could not do while in the confines of his jurisdiction.
